Talented Pilates-Fitness Instructor True Healer as Well: Nika Eshetu Combines Expertise, Knowledge and Empathy in Aiding Clients
In my short tenure as a member at the Equinox Fitness Club in Marina Del Rey, I met a number of trainers who struck me as being more than just that, for they had bridged a gap and become Healers in their own right. In mid-October, a new Pilates instructor came on board, Nika Eshetu, and I first noticed her while icing a swollen knee just outside the Pilates workout studio. While easily appreciated for her beauty, there was something more, something undefinable, that emanated from her and I was soon to find out why?
In this human life there are some truisms: It is easier to be rotten than good, it is easier to tear down worthy individuals and institutions than to build them, and the avenues of rationalization for being rotten are many while the path to purity and grace can be a pothole strewn mountain road with a steep drop left and rocks falling from above. Dealt a bad hand from genetic happenstance, involving kidney and upper limb mobility trouble, Nika Eshetu has slogged through a numbing maze of difficulty to become a fascinating person who is also what I would call a True Healer.
After seeing me icing down a few times, she inquired as to what had happened and we had a few brief conversations over the next few days. Then on October 19, near the time of the club closing as I was, of course, icing my swollen knee we had a chance to talk in depth. After relating my own story of a two-year recovery from a serious illness, the last one filled with intense fitness training, I inquired about why she had hinted at her own medical journeys?
Nika Eshetu told me of her kidney transplant and all that entailed in terms of dealing with doctors, medical bureaucracies and other struggles. She related how finding Pilates as a form of exercise transformed everything and gave her new life and energy when it was most needed. My tale of grinding back to health seemed to pale in comparison, however, this didn’t stop her from taking a keen interest, offering advice and encouraging me onward.
Nika took her recovery thru Pilates to heart and became an instructor so that the miracles she experienced could be transmitted to others in physical distress. She now holds multiple fitness certifications, teaches on cruises and founded her own state-of-the-art Pilates studio, Atomic Pilates, in North Hollywood, California. By coincidence, only weeks before I had begun to take Pilates classes at Equinox and in short order it became obvious this was a key activity for my ongoing fitness and health battle.
Aside from that, I realized my intuition was correct, there much more to Nika then met the eye but which hadn’t escaped my sensing the glowing light of life burning inside of her. She listens, cares and knows; a knowing from intense studies, a caring grounded in painful struggles to attain a healthy body, and an ability in the art of listening that probably comes from having to know everything happening around her.
This remarkable woman has the Courage of a Spartan Warrior, the Brain of a Ph.D. and the Soul of an Angel. This Onehas traveled the pothole strewn mountain road with a steep drop left and falling rocks from above to Purity and Grace.
My blessing is to have met such a person as Nika Eshetu and to have “known without knowing” that this person has something more than most of us crawling the Earth, the latter which makes me feel good about myself.
